4 Graphic Design Tips for a Timeless Logo and Brand

Creating a logo that will stand the test of time is easier said than done, we have created a list of 4 Graphic Design tips for a timeless logo and brand.

Your logo is a key feature of your brand identity. It’s the visual representation of who you are, what you value, and, if done well, is instantly recognizable. It’s the introduction to your brand and in business, first impressions matter. That’s why it’s so important to have a logo that remains relevant for as long as possible.

Styles change. Trends change. Your brand identity shouldn’t. Elements may evolve when you’re ready to scale, or if you pivot your offering, but the look should remain consistent. It’s important to create a brand that reflects your company’s values and is based on a shared connection with your target audience. The logo plays an integral role in achieving that.

Take Coca-Cola, for example. Over the last 100 years, despite the changes their product has undergone, their logo has remained timeless. While there have been little tweaks to the design over time, the logo is still instantly recognizable.

Here are the 4 Graphic Design Tips for a Timeless Logo and Brand that will stay consistent even if your business evolves.

1. Keep it simple

It’s natural for your brand to grow and evolve over time. Creating an overly complicated logo makes it tough to keep that brand consistent and recognizable through growth. It’s harder to take pieces of a logo away or change them regularly because they no longer represent you or go out of style. Work with your graphic designer to develop a simple logo with simple shapes, and no overly complicated graphic elements. If your logo is more text-based, avoid too many flourishes.

2. Consider its use

It’s important to think about what you will be using your logo for. If you’re intending to use it for print (clothing, business cards, hats, and other promotional items) then it should be something people are willing to wear. Printing companies should also be able to easily duplicate your logo on non-paper materials. A well-designed logo should be easy to identify when scaled up, but more importantly when scaled down.

3. Full color and black and white

When considering your brand colors, not only is it important that the color palette be simple and that the colors work well together, but go back to tip 2: where will it be used? A timeless logo will work well in full color but also in black and white. This is to ensure it will stand out against a background that is patterned or could clash with your full color logo.

4. Think long term

Your logo should be as original as you. It may be tempting to follow the latest design trends but remember that trends change. Jumping on a trend bandwagon will ensure one thing: that your logo will look like everyone else’s, and this will really hinder your brand identity. A timeless logo will stand the test of time needing only minimal adaptation.

When the time comes to shift the core focus of your business in the future, don’t be afraid to evolve your brand. Having a timeless logo won’t require you to completely start from scratch, just adapt some elements. This is why working with a graphic designer is so critical. They can help design a logo and develop a brand that will last the life of your business.
